The introduction of competition into the English water-sector is undoubtedly an opportunity for businesses to reduce costs and save money.
However, it is unlikely that savings will be huge on day one. We believe that, as in Scotland, the market will take time to mature. The incumbent English water companies will seek to differentiate their offerings through added-value services, at the same time giving very low wholesale margins to other retailers and thus limited cost savings to end-users.
Market forces and regulatory pressures will change this over time and the cost saving potential will increase. In the meantime however, we believe English businesses would be best placed to proactively review their bills and consider undertaking water audits at their high usage sites.
Unless you use vast quantities of water in your business processes, savings from these activities are likely to far exceed what could be gained by switching supplier.
